Thomas L,'s Story

Don't know how many of you remember me, but since I left Spain, I've spent most of my years in Texas. After high school graduation, I got my first real job, as a patient escort in the radiology dept of a local hospital. Instead of going to the Univ of Houston as I was expected to, I worked for a year(saving money for a car). Finally my parents convinced me to start college, and I attended Grambling State Univ. Had a couple of strong years, political science major, dean's list with plans to attend law school after my junior year. Then I met "her". By the time it was over, I was in scholastic ruin, and emotionally drained. I returned to Beaumont, Texas, and got a job as an orderly in the surgical dept of the same hospital I had previously worked for. Some of the doctors and staff members realized I had more potential than mopping the floor. They got me into an on the job training program as a surgical technologist. It turns out that I had an aptitude for this type of work. Eventhough I was strong in all of the subspecialties of surgery, I choose orthopedics as my own subspecialty and excelled in the field. I worked at that hospital for 10 years. I gained the attention and trust of an orthopedic surgeon who left his group, to form his own. He hired, and trained me to be a first surgical assistant. Over the following 15 years, I helped him form and develop one of the largest sports medicine practices in southeast Texas. One Saturday morning in early 2002, I awoke to the sensation of being stabbed between the shoulderblades with an icepick. The hand and wrist of my right arm contracted as if I had cerebral palsy. Tests showed that my spinal cord was pressed near to compleatly flat. I had been struggling the previous year with my fine motor skills but didn't know why, and hid it as best I could. I underwent a quickly scheduled cervical reconstructive surgery. The object of the procedure was to eliminate the possibility of cervical severance, and relieve the pressure on my spinal cord. I have many more good days than bad ones. As long as I listen to my body, and respect my limits, I have very few problems. I no longer work as an orthopedic first surgical assistant because the physical demands are too great. My fine motor skills are too inconsistent for the more delicate surgeries, so I re-entered the workforce once again as a surgical technologist. I have a 32 year old son from my f...Expand for more
irst marriage to a sexxxy young thing named Linda. I vainly named him Jr. Yep, I'm on my second one now, but more about that in a minute. My first marriage failed since I only married her because I made her pregnant. I wasn't a very good husband, and she wasn't any better at being a wife. The marriage only lasted 3 years. She decided to live the California lifestyle, but I kept my son with me in Texas. Thank goodness I was better at being a father than a husband. It wasn't all easy, but my son graduated high school and college. I might also add, that he has no criminal record or aptitude. He has grown into a fine young man in spite of myself(smile). He has been supervising at an oilfield equiptment manufacturing plant for several years now. He has gone farther in education, and is off to a much better start than his daddy, which makes me very proud indeed. Nearly 20 years later, I married my pesent wife, Linda(Different girl). She's an RN, and deserves a lot of credit for putting up with me. We've been married for 12 years now. She had 3 daughters when I met her, and are now aged 27, 20, and 13. We have 3 grandchildren with a fourth on the way in January. The oldest girl(Brandy) recently went back to college to finish her degree. The middle girl(Tessa) will hopefully have her degree this coming spring. The baby girl(Tylea) is in advanced studies, and hopefully will stay on track for a full ride to the school of her choice. We also have a foster daughter(Jermeka), aged 19 and currently in college with hopes of attending law school. In addition to our kids, we have 5 dogs and 2 cats(About,4 dogs and 2 cats more than I wanted). I have developed many personal interests over the years but my main loves are 1) video gaming(I'm just a big kid at heart). 2) fishing(I mainly chase bass and crappie, but enjoy costal fishing also). 3) Riding my motorcycle(Just recently bought a new bike and started riding again after nearly 30 years). Wheeew!!! Well, that's pretty much everything. Not the life I thought I would have, but not a bad life by any stretch(and I'm still on the right side of the dirt, that's always a plus). So many of you have accomplished wonderful things in your lives, and when I hear about them I feel a touch of pride because I knew you "back when". You guys represent a significant portion of the best part of my life. I love you all, and wish you continued good fortune.
